Thinking of cancelling your education policy because the numbers don’t make sense anymore?
Or you are not able to pay the premiums due to factors beyond your control?
Not so fast.
Before you shred those policy documents, let’s have an honest conversation.
Many people feel frustrated with their education or endowment policies.
They run the numbers, and suddenly it stops making sense:
- Returns look disappointing
- Commitments feel heavy
- The temptation to cancel immediately becomes strong
Here’s the reality:
You may have bought the policy emotionally, but you cannot exit emotionally.
You need a clear, strategic exit plan—one that doesn’t leave you financially worse off.

Option 1: Contributions Below 3 Years
This is where many people start calling insurance a scam.
You’ve paid premiums for about two years and then decide to exit.
And boom—the insurer tells you there is no refund.
Truth: Insurance is not a savings account.
It works more like medical cover:
- You sign up → you are protected immediately
- If something happens just one week after signing, your family receives the full payout
- If nothing happens and you cancel early → no cash value, no refund
Realistic Options:
- Take the loss and move on like a soldier
- Reduce contributions to the minimum, continue until crossing the 3-year mark, then cancel and recover a small portion
Option 2: Contributions Above 3 Years
Once you cross the 3-year mark, most policies begin to build cash value—not 100%, but something (typically 50%–80%, depending on the policy).
Your options now expand:
- Cancel the policy and take the refund
- Reduce contributions to the minimum and invest the difference elsewhere
- Declare the policy “Paid-Up” – stop paying premiums but keep it active (with reduced maturity benefits)
Before You Cancel — Think Carefully
If you are already far along in the policy and only a few years remain, just finish the race.
If the policy gives returns above 8%, that is already respectable—especially considering the life protection enjoyed during the term.
Don’t throw away the benefits when you are close to the finish line.
