The gap is getting interesting!
On 12th March 2026, I invested approximately Ksh 100,000 in the stock market and built my own 5-stock portfolio.
The first month humbled me.
At one point, I was down Ksh 8,625.16.
Fast-forward to 1st September 2026:
- Investment: Ksh 100,005.46
- Current Value: Ksh 114,974.32
- Profit: Ksh 14,968.86
- Return: 14.97%
Not bad!
But remember, I was curious about something else.
What if, instead of picking and managing stocks myself, I gave approximately the same Ksh 100,000 to professional fund managers?
So, on 2nd April 2026, I invested Ksh 100,000 in the Arvocap Thamani Equity Fund.
Here, I don’t select individual stocks myself.
Professional fund managers do the heavy lifting for me.
And as at 1st September 2026:
- Investment: Ksh 100,000
- Current Value: Ksh 128,665.73
- Profit: Ksh 28,665.73
- Return: 28.67%
Now look at this:
- My Stock Portfolio: +14.97%
- Thamani Equity Fund: +28.67%
Thamani is currently winning by a significant margin!
On the same approximate Ksh 100,000 starting investment, Thamani has generated almost twice the percentage return of my self-managed portfolio so far.
But the race is NOT over.
I intend to track both investments for a full year.

But Before Those Returns Make You Rush Into Equities, Understand This
Equities Are NOT For Everyone.
Higher return potential comes with higher risk and volatility.
Today’s gains can quickly become tomorrow’s losses.
I invested knowing that if the market drops, my heart won’t start palpitating and send me to hospital for glucose.
If you’re a conservative investor, direct stocks or an equity fund may not be your ideal starting point.
A Fixed Income Fund may be more suitable.
The lesson?
Build Your Investment Muscle Gradually.
Understand your risk appetite.
Understand what you’re investing in.
Understand your financial goals.
Then give your money time to work.
The Ksh 100K Experiment Continues
14.97% vs. 28.67%.
The Ksh 100K experiment continues.
Let’s see who wins after one year!
