On 12th March 2026, I invested Ksh 100,000 in the stock market, building my own 5-stock portfolio.
The first month humbled me.
At one point, I was down Ksh 8,625.16.
Today?
Profit: Ksh 9,037.72
Return: 9.04%
It has been a journey of ups and downs, testing my patience, discipline and resilience.
I invest through the simple Ziidi Trader platform on the Safaricom OneApp, and I regularly share updates on this portfolio.
But my curiosity didn’t end there.
I wanted to answer one important question:
What if, instead of picking stocks myself, I gave the same Ksh 100,000 to professional fund managers?
So, on 2nd April 2026, I knocked on Arvocap Asset Managers‘ door and invested another Ksh 100,000 in Thamani Equity Fund.
This fund invests primarily in equities listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
The difference?
Here, I don’t have to research and pick individual stocks myself.
The Professional Fund Managers Do The Heavy Lifting For Me.
And the results so far?
- Investment: Ksh 100,000
- Current Value: Ksh 120,214.26
- Gain: Ksh 20,214.26
- Return: 20.21% in about 4 months!

So Far, Thamani Equity Fund Is Clearly Ahead
So far, Thamani Equity Fund is clearly ahead: 20.21% vs. 9.04%.
But the race isn’t over.
I intend to track BOTH investments and see where they stand after one year.
Now, before you get overly excited about those returns, understand this:
Equities Are NOT For Everyone.
They come with higher risk and market volatility. Your investment can rise, and it can also fall.
I invested knowing that if the market drops, my heart won’t start palpitating and send me to hospital for glucose.
If you’re a conservative investor, an equity fund or direct stocks may not be your starting point.
A lower-risk option such as a Fixed Income Fund may be more suitable.
The Lesson?
Build Your Investment Muscle Gradually.
Understand your risk appetite.
Understand what you’re investing in.
Understand your financial goals.
Then give your money time to work.
The Ksh 100K experiment continues.
Let’s see who wins after one year!
